Is hipages Worth It? A Tradie's Honest Answer

ByEdris Nazari·Geelong, Victoria·Built 30+ tradie websites

hipages is worth it for some tradies and a money pit for others. It tends to work when you are new, need work fast, reply to leads within minutes and win at least one in three quotes. It tends to eat your margin when you are established, work in a crowded trade, or keep losing shared leads to other tradies who quote lower. The deciding number is your cost per job won, not the cost per lead.

We build websites for tradies, so we are not neutral on where your enquiries should come from. But hipages has real uses, and we will be straight about them. Every number below comes from hipages' own pages or a named source.

Is hipages worth it for tradies?

hipages is worth it if the jobs you win from it cover the monthly fee, the leads you lose and your time quoting, with margin left over. For a new tradie with an empty diary, that bar is often easy to clear. For an established tradie with steady referrals, shared leads and price shoppers often make it a poor deal.

The membership costs $139 to $649 a month plus GST, according to hipages' membership page in October 2026, and new members start on a 6 month term that renews for 12. We break the costs down line by line in hipages cost for tradies. This article is about the other half of the question: whether the work it brings is worth that money.

When hipages works

hipages works best for tradies who are just starting out, tradies filling quiet weeks between bigger jobs, and tradies who answer leads within minutes. It suits small, quick jobs close to home. It also helps anyone who needs reviews fast, because every job won is a chance at a review on the platform.

Real tradies say the same thing in their own words:

  • Getting started. "Two brothers I know started a very successful business by using Hipages until they could no longer keep up with the workload and had built the contacts to go out on their own." (r/australia, October 2022)
  • Filling gaps. "I find it handy for filling gaps with quick simple jobs." (r/AusRenovation, December 2022)
  • Building a name. One tradie said it "was handy when trying to get my name out about 5 years ago, but mostly doing little jobs that led to repeated clients and word of mouth." (r/AusRenovation, August 2025)

Notice the pattern. The tradies who did well used hipages as a stepping stone. They used it to get the first jobs, the first reviews and the first repeat clients, and then leaned on word of mouth.

When hipages eats your margin

hipages eats your margin when you keep paying for leads you do not win. That happens with price shoppers, in crowded trades where other tradies undercut you, and when you cannot reply quickly because you are on the tools. It also happens to established tradies whose time is worth more than small jobs pay.

Here is how tradies describe the downside:

  • Tyre kickers. "Excessive prices to pay for leads that have no guarantee of getting jobs, lots of tyre kickers." (r/AusRenovation, August 2025)
  • Price shoppers. Another tradie said the customers it attracted "were penny pinchers and would always try to squeeze you down." (same thread)
  • Cut throat pricing. Electricians who use it for extra work "say it's pretty cut throat with pricing and the amount of people jumping on the jobs." (r/australia, October 2022)

When a homeowner has three quotes side by side, the job can turn into a race to the bottom. If you price for quality, insurance and a proper licence, you will lose some of those to whoever is cheapest. That is not a reason to drop your price. It is a reason to check how much you are paying to lose.

Is hipages dodgy?

No, hipages is a real, established platform, not a scam. But it has a history worth knowing. In May 2023 the ACCC accepted a court-enforceable undertaking after hipages admitted it likely misled subscribers between October 2018 and January 2022 about automatic renewals and early termination fees. Read the contract carefully before you sign.

The ACCC's Deputy Chair at the time, Mick Keogh, said many subscribers "were unaware that they had to specifically opt out of hipages' automatic 12-month renewal, and that there was only a very short cooling off period in which they could avoid paying an early termination fee." hipages agreed to disclose its renewal and cancellation terms clearly, review complaints and remediate affected subscribers.

The current terms are spelled out on the membership page: a 6 month introductory term, a 12 month renewal that hipages says it will tell you about first, and a seven day cooling off period that only applies if you have not accepted any leads. That last condition is the one to watch. A December 2022 r/AusRenovation thread described a tradie who lost the cooling off period after agreeing on the phone to "give it another couple of days". That is one person's account, but it is a common complaint.

So the honest answer: not dodgy, but strict. Treat it like any contract with an automatic renewal. Know the end date and decide before it arrives.

Does hipages take a percentage?

No. hipages does not take a commission or a percentage of the job. Its own FAQ says so. You pay a monthly subscription that comes with credits, and you spend those credits to accept leads. If you win a big job, hipages gets nothing extra. If you win nothing, you have still paid for the leads.

That model is different from Airtasker, where taskers pay a service fee out of jobs they complete instead of paying for leads upfront. One tradie in an August 2025 r/AusRenovation thread put Airtasker's cut at "roughly 20%" and said "that 20% gets passed onto client." Check Airtasker's own fee page for current rates before you compare them.

Why reply speed decides whether hipages pays

hipages says every lead is capped at three businesses. The homeowner usually talks to whoever gets back to them first and sounds like they know what they are doing. If you are on a roof or under a house when the lead comes in, you are often third in line before you have even read it.

This is why the 20 Minute Marketing analysis from May 2026 describes the tradies who do well as fast responders with a complete profile. It puts average performance at about 1 in 5 quotes won and strong performers at about 1 in 3. The gap between those two is mostly speed and how professional the first reply looks.

If you cannot reply within minutes during work hours, you are paying for leads that someone else will win. Our guide to why tradies lose jobs to slow replies explains why the first reply matters so much.

The break-even test

Divide what you spent on hipages over the last three months by the number of jobs you won from it. That is your cost per job won. If that number is a small slice of your average profit per job, hipages is worth it. If it eats a big chunk of your margin, it is not.

Here is a worked example using 20 Minute Marketing's $25 to $80 per lead estimate. Say your leads cost $40 each:

Win rateLeads per job wonLead cost per job won
1 in 33$120
1 in 55$200
1 in 88$320

A $120 cost on a $2,500 repaint is fine. A $320 cost on a $400 tap replacement is not. Run the sum with your own trade, your own job sizes and your own win rate. The lead cost calculator does it for you in under a minute.

How to get more out of hipages if you stay

If the numbers work, make them work harder. Reply to every lead within minutes, finish your profile with real job photos, set your categories and travel radius to the jobs you actually want, and link your Google reviews. hipages' own FAQ says you can link your website and connect your Google reviews to your profile.

A few more habits that help:

  • Be picky. Only accept leads you would actually want to do, in suburbs you actually want to drive to.
  • Call, do not just message. A phone call feels more professional than a text quote, and it sorts out tyre kickers fast.
  • Track every lead. Write down cost, outcome and profit. Without that, you are guessing.
  • Diarise the renewal date. Decide whether to stay a month before it arrives.
  • Ask for a review on every job. Reviews lift your profile on the platform, and Google reviews help your business everywhere else too.

What to build alongside hipages

Use hipages for short-term work, and build something you own at the same time: a Google Business Profile, Google reviews and a website with a page for each service and suburb. Enquiries from those come only to you, with no credits to spend and no other tradies quoting on the same job.

This is the pattern the successful tradies above describe. They used the platform to get started, then shifted to word of mouth and their own channels. A painting business owner in an August 2026 r/smallbusiness thread was told their Google Business Profile should be the "#1 priority" because it "drove like 80% of our early leads" for the commenter. We cover that in Google Business Profile for tradies.

A website does not replace hipages overnight, and nobody can promise it will bring a set number of jobs. What it does is give you a channel you control, structured to improve local search visibility, so that over time you depend less on paid leads. We lay out the two side by side in hipages vs your own website.

See what that looks like for your trade: websites for painters, websites for plumbers, websites for electricians or websites for cleaners. For a live example, look at the Elegant Prime Painting Build.

Frequently asked questions

Is hipages worth it as a tradie?

It is worth it if your cost per job won is a small part of your profit per job. New tradies, fast responders and those who win about 1 in 3 quotes usually do well. Established tradies, slow responders and those in crowded, price-driven trades often find shared leads cost more than the work is worth.

Is hipages dodgy?

hipages is a real, established platform, not a scam. In May 2023 it gave the ACCC a court-enforceable undertaking after admitting it likely misled subscribers about automatic renewals and early termination fees between 2018 and 2022. The current terms are published clearly. Read them, and diarise your renewal date before you sign.

Does hipages take a percentage?

No. hipages' own FAQ says it takes no commission or percentage of your earnings. You pay a monthly subscription, from $139 plus GST, and spend the included credits to accept leads. You pay for the lead whether or not you win the job, but nothing extra when you do win it.

What is better than hipages?

For most established tradies, work you own beats paid leads: word of mouth, a Google Business Profile with plenty of reviews, and your own website with service and suburb pages. Other platforms like Airtasker and ServiceSeeking charge in different ways. Compare them on cost per job won, not on the monthly price.

How do I cancel hipages?

hipages says you can cancel during the seven day cooling off period if you have not accepted any leads. After that you are on the 6 month introductory term, then a 12 month renewal that hipages says it will warn you about. Contact hipages support well before the renewal date if you want out.

Why do some tradies hate hipages?

The common complaints are paying for leads that go to other tradies, price shoppers and tyre kickers, and contracts that are hard to get out of. The ACCC's 2023 action over renewal disclosures added to that reputation. Tradies who use it well usually treat it as a stepping stone, not a long-term plan.
