Facebook and Instagram ads work for tradies when they are proper lead ads, not boosted posts, shown only to homeowners in the suburbs you want work in, built from real photos of your own jobs, with a short form that asks what the job is and where. They fail when they are boosted posts to friends of your page, use stock photos, go to the wrong areas, or bring in enquiries nobody answers for a day. The ad gets the enquiry. The reply wins the job.
Most tradies who say "Facebook doesn't work" tried a boosted post. That is a different thing.
Why boosted posts rarely bring in jobs
The "Boost post" button is built to get a post more likes, comments and shares. That is what it optimises for, so that is what you get.
- It shows the post to people likely to react, often your followers and their friends, not homeowners who need a painter.
- It has no form, so interested people have to message you or ring, and most do not.
- You cannot easily tell which reactions came from people in your service area.
A tradie who spends a few hundred dollars boosting posts usually ends up with a handful of likes from mates, a few new followers and no quotes. That is not proof Facebook does not work. It is proof boosting is not lead generation.
What a lead ad does differently
A lead ad is set up in Meta Ads Manager with a "Leads" objective. Meta then shows it to people in your chosen area who are more likely to fill in a form, not just like a post. When someone taps it, a short form opens inside Facebook or Instagram with their name and phone already filled in. They answer your questions and send it.
For trades, that matters for two reasons. It removes the friction of leaving the app. And it lets you ask the questions that sort real jobs from tyre kickers before you pick up the phone.
The five things that decide whether your ads bring in jobs
1. Where the ad shows
Set the location to the suburbs you actually want work in, not a 50 km circle around your house. If you do not want to drive to the other side of the city for a small job, do not pay to show ads there.
Check the placements too. By default, Meta can show ads across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network, which places ads inside other apps and games. For trades, those other-app placements often produce accidental taps. Many tradies get better results keeping ads to Facebook and Instagram feeds, stories and reels.
2. What the ad shows
Homeowners scroll past stock photos. They stop for a house that looks like theirs.
- Before and after. The single strongest image for painters, tilers, landscapers and concreters.
- The tradie on camera. A 20 second phone video of you on site, talking plainly about the job, builds more trust than polished graphics.
- Local. Mention the suburb or area. "Just finished this weatherboard repaint in Narre Warren" lands harder than "Quality painting services".
Change the ads regularly. The same ad shown to the same suburbs for months gets tired, and results drop.
3. What the form asks
A good trade lead form has three to five short questions:
- What do you need done? (multiple choice: interior, exterior, roof and so on)
- What suburb is the job in?
- When are you hoping to start?
- Anything else we should know? (optional)
Meta also offers a "higher intent" form that adds a review step before the form sends. It brings in fewer enquiries, but more of them are real. For trades, that trade-off is usually worth it.
4. How fast you reply
This is where most ad money is wasted. A homeowner fills in a form at 7.30 pm on the couch. If you ring them back at 2 pm the next day, they have already booked someone who rang first.
The fix is automation, not willpower: an instant text that confirms you got the enquiry and asks one question, a text back to every missed call, and a follow-up on every quote. We go deeper in why tradies lose jobs to slow replies and missed-call text-back for tradies.
5. How much you spend, and for how long
Small tests tell you which message works, not whether ads work. A few dollars a day for a week is not enough data for Meta to find the right people in your area, and not enough for you to judge.
Work out the budget from the job, not the other way round: what an average job is worth, how many extra jobs you want a month, and what you would happily pay to win one. A bathroom tiler or a painter doing full exterior repaints can afford far more per job than someone doing small call-outs. Give a campaign enough budget and enough weeks to learn before you decide.
Mistakes we see most
- Sending ads to the homepage. If you send traffic to a website instead of a lead form, send it to the page for that exact service, with a quote form and a call button on screen.
- No way to sort enquiries. Without qualifying questions you spend your evenings ringing people who wanted a $200 job across town.
- Running ads from a page with no photos or reviews. People click your page before they enquire. An empty page loses them.
- Agencies keeping the ad account. If the account is in their name, the history and the audiences leave with them. Make sure the ad account is yours.
- Judging results by likes. The only numbers that matter are quote requests, quotes sent and jobs won.
Facebook ads or Google for tradies?
They do different jobs. Google catches homeowners already searching for your service. Facebook and Instagram put your work in front of homeowners who need it but were not searching yet. Google is usually where you start for urgent trades like emergency plumbing. For painters, tilers, landscapers and renovators, where the job is visual and planned, Facebook and Instagram often work well. Many established tradies run both, alongside a strong Google Business Profile.
How Ampliia runs Meta ads for tradies
Meta ads to homeowners in your suburbs are part of the 90-Day Homeowner Job Pipeline. Ads are built from your own job photos, with 4 new ads a month, a Job Filter form that asks the questions above, 60-second reply texts, missed-call text-back and a Quote Chaser, so enquiries do not go cold while you are on a job.
Ad spend is paid straight to Meta on your own card, at least $1,000 a month, and the ad account stays yours. 25 Qualified Quote Requests in 90 days, or you don't pay. Conditions apply. Month to month, no lock-in, one tradie per trade per area.
Frequently asked questions
Do Facebook ads work for tradies in Australia?
Yes, when they are lead ads shown to homeowners in the suburbs you want work in, built from real photos of your jobs, with a short form that asks what the job is and where. Boosted posts mostly reach friends and followers and rarely bring in quote requests. Fast replies to every enquiry decide how many of those requests turn into paying jobs.
How much should a tradie spend on Facebook ads?
Work backwards from your jobs. Take what an average job is worth, how many extra jobs you want each month, and what you would happily pay to win one. A trade with high job values can spend more per job than one doing small call-outs. Very small tests mostly show which message works, not whether ads work for your business.
What is the difference between boosting a post and running an ad?
Boosting a post optimises for likes, comments and shares, so Meta shows it to people likely to react, often your existing followers. A lead ad set up in Ads Manager optimises for form submissions, shows to people in your chosen area more likely to enquire, and opens a short form inside the app. For tradies, the lead ad is the one that brings in jobs.
Should tradies use Facebook or Google ads?
Google ads catch homeowners already searching for your service, which suits urgent work. Facebook and Instagram ads show your work to homeowners who need it but were not searching yet, which suits visual, planned jobs like painting, tiling and landscaping. Many established tradies run both, alongside a strong Google Business Profile with real photos and recent reviews.
